Avril Lavigne’s Let Go Turns 20, Releases Expanded Edition
Avril Lavigne's career-defining debut studio album, Let Go, was released 20 years ago today. (Cue a flood of nostalgic millennial tears.) The pop-punk queen celebrated the record's 20th birthday with a sweet post on Instagram thanking all her collaborators and fans that made the album a hit. The post included old photos of her with songwriter Lauren Christy, who co-wrote and co-produced 4 tracks on the record.
The rerecording of the album includes new versions of the classic tracks we know and love, such as “Sk8er Boi”, as well as some unreleased B-sides like “Why.” It also includes a beautiful cover of “Breakaway”, a song that Avril originally wrote and later gave to Kelly Clarkson, another 2000s icon. She wrote the track at a young age after “taking the leap of faith” of leaving her hometown to pursue her music career. It definitely paid off.
Side note from the author: This anniversary announcement makes me feel old. I loved this album as a kid and would get so happy whenever “Complicated” or “Sk8er Boi” played on Radio Disney. Every pre-teen girl I knew wanted Avril's cool style and attitude… and so did I. Those were some good times! Avril was practically my first introduction to angsty pop-rock songs and she had an undeniable impact on early 2000s music. I still love her to this day and look forward to her new releases!
The 20th Anniversary Edition of Let Go can be purchased wherever music is sold, or streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and more.
