What To Pack For a Music Festival

It’s festival season! If you’ve never attended a music festival before and you’re not sure what to bring with you, here’s a list that can help.

1. Your Ticket

Of course! This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people get distracted by other things on their festival to-do lists and then forget to bring the thing that actually gets them into the festival. Make sure to double-check if your ticket needs to be printed, if it’s a wristband, a mobile ticket (some event organizers like AXS might require you to download their app to access the digital ticket), if it has to be picked up at will call, etc.

2. Clear Fanny Pack or Backpack

We’ve noticed a new bag policy trend recently: more organizers are only allowing transparent fanny packs and backpacks. If you bring a purse or regular backpack that isn’t clear, you may be turned away and asked to leave it in your car or rent a locker. We think fanny packs are the more comfortable option and they usually have more than enough space to carry all your necessary items.

3. Sunscreen

Please protect your skin! The UV rays are still there even if it’s cloudy. At some outdoor festivals, shaded areas are limited and you’ll most likely have to stand under the blazing sun for long periods of time. Some venues no longer allow people to bring sun umbrellas. You don’t want to end up with painful sunburns, so bring a travel size high SPF sunscreen and reapply it often.

4. Sunglasses

Since we’re already on the topic of sun protection, we also recommend a good pair of sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. Your eyes will thank you and you don’t want to be uncomfortable while watching a set and having to squint because the sun is blaring right above the stage.

5. Portable Charger

If you plan to use your phone often to take photos and post on social media, or if your phone just runs out of battery quickly, you should bring a small, portable charger with you. Charging stations are becoming more common at festivals, but a portable charger is still a good backup option in case of an emergency.

6. Wallet (pack light)

Just bring the essentials: your ID/driver’s license, a debit card, and some cash. Please note that some events have gone completely cashless since Covid happened, so you should definitely bring a card. A digital wallet on your phone like Apple Pay or Google Pay can also be convenient if merchants accept them.

7. Pain Killers

Advil, Tylenol, Aleve, etc. can really come to the rescue if you get a sudden headache or your legs are hurting after walking and standing for so many hours.

8. Reusable Water Bottle

Stay hydrated while being nice to the environment by avoiding single use plastic. You can easily refill your bottle at water fountains throughout the day. Collapsible water bottles are also a great option and not as heavy as metal bottles.

9. Hand Sanitizer

This one is a no-brainer— regardless if there’s a pandemic or not.

Thanks for stopping by and have fun at your festival(s)!
