April 18, 2023 — Melbourne-based future soul band, Hiatus Kaiyote, is one of the most innovative and dynamic musical groups in the industry today. Taking no time off between their sets at both Coachella weekends, Hiatus Kaiyote is making the most of their time Stateside with a mini tour. Their sold out show at the Novo in Downtown LA was no small feat. From the moment you entered the venue to secure your spot in the crowd, fans were already surging with an electric energy. The neosoul group shared highlights from their latest full-length release, Mood Valiant (2021), along with fresh, experimental takes on classics such as "Nakamarra," "Molasses," and "The World It Softly Lulls."
The musicianship executed by each individual is unlike any other. Paul Bender plays impressively technical bass lines as naturally as breathing; Synth player Simon Mavin creates an other-worldly soundscape vital to the essence of Hiatus Kaiyote, transcribing and reinventing parts from the record to a live setting; Perrin Moss has a skillful way of making odd-metered time signatures feel as cozy and comfortable as 4/4 while wowing the audience with his rhythmic chops.
Of course all of these elements are tied together by the ethereal vocals and silky smooth guitar of frontwoman, Nai Palm. Supported by three gifted background vocalists, this is a band that exhibits musical excellence yet also makes the audience feel like they're at a jam session with their closest friends. This is a band you won't want to miss and you'll regret not jumping on the bandwagon sooner.
